At his essence, Mallory is a cat of contradictions. Antisocial, yet desperate for attention, and his paranoia has driven him to privacy despite wearing his heart on his sleeve. It’s almost as if he were born to be a more loving, open cat, but living on his own has forced him to prioritise survival over nourishing his soul with the affection it so dearly craves. “Survival” is perhaps his core ideal; he’s seen what happens to the dead, and he’s terrified of rotting into the wastes without experiencing the love and acceptance he knows he was designed for.

After all, if he dies without ever being wanted, then what was the point of his existence in the first place? He knows he just has to power through these lows, to stay alive long enough for him to find what he’s after. Then, and only then, will he be able to change his goal. In some ways, this is a good motivator for him to keep himself away from any unnecessary harm, but in others it’s an excuse for him to avoid working on bettering himself.

“I can’t stop hurting them until I know I’m safe.”

All throughout his early life, he was surrounded by a blur of unfamiliar faces. The occupants of the shelter’s cages were constantly cycling in and out, and what little friendships he made were fleeting. Anyone he clicked with seemed to get adopted soon after, and eventually Mal convinced himself that he must be cursed. He struggles forming connections thanks to the uncertainty of his kithood, and has a serious problem with object permanence when it comes to people and relationships. This is partially why he's so clingy; sure that the moment someone slips from his sight, they'll be gone forever and he'll never again feel their warmth. He just can't understand why everyone leaves him... he can't understand what he did to make his parents give him up, to make his brother abandon him without so much as a goodbye, to prevent him from being adopted. He feels like his mere existence is a crime that he's being punished for; eternally unwanted. He loves the idea of love, but since that feels so out of his grasp, he's begun to despise it. He despises hearts, flowers, and can’t stand public displays of affection. Anyone who has love and doesn't treasure it makes him feel like they're spitting right in his face, and after enough years that anger built into a seething darkness deep enough to drive him to kill.

Murder, as it turns out, is the kind of all-consuming pit that refuses to free you once you’ve entered.

He succumbs to the muck and grime of his environment, getting so depressed that he doesn't even bother grooming himself. Then, when people don't want to be around him, he uses it as proof that they're all just unreasonably hateful towards him. He reinforces the idea in his head that everyone's just needlessly cruel to him, while also refusing to make an effort to blend in better with his peers. He doesn't attempt to keep a hold on his tantrums, he refuses to change behaviours others don't like, he allows blood and oil to congeal in his fur. He just gets so caught up in the idea that everyone will hate him no matter what that he doesn't bother trying. It's a self fulfilling prophecy, and one of the reasons he wasn't ever adopted.

He shuts himself away, isolated, twisting his perception of others in his head while doing all he can to avoid leaving his safe spots. This way, he has nothing to dismantle these growing delusions, and they fester until these suspicions become facts in his head. He's too scared to go and just talk to people, because he's convinced he'll just be proven right. When someone likes him, it's the exception, and they become an actual face in the crowd of dehumanised monsters he visualises when he imagines the general public.

There are two sides to every coin, so beneath the grime lies the remnants of Mal’s light. He’s compassionate when he's not being selfish, and cares very much for those he doesn't consider villains. Despite being cowardly for the sake of keeping his own life intact, he will risk himself to help others if he thinks they're worth it, and he always stands up for what he believes in. He has a lot of life when he's not zoning out or in a sickly, fatigued state, very energetic when he's around those he loves. Once he's gotten close to someone he proves himself to be loyal to a fault, and he’s surprisingly friendly if you approach him in the right way. Even though Mal has to lie about certain things to survive, especially related to his crimes, he's a very genuine person and will never fake his feelings. He wears his heart on his sleeve in all its raw volatility.

His mind isn’t as dull as he leads people to believe, and he excels at taking in and cultivating new knowledge. He's good at using the resources available to him, and has a very vivid imagination. He actually spends most of his time daydreaming, thinking endlessly about some suave, rich knight whisking him away to a better life. He's very romantically inclined and, once his barriers have been broken down, astoundingly affectionate as well.

In his heart he's just... very lonely. He does want to become a better person, but he's scared that it'll make no difference and only render things harder for him. He doesn't want to return to his soft, vulnerable kithood just to be beaten back into what he is now. He doesn't think he could take that sort of slow, insidious pain again; a series of little deaths, progressively stripping more and more from the fruit-flesh of his soul until only the hard, bitter pit remains
